Welcome to the Spung Mills History Room

Tuckerton RoadGreetings! Welcome to the History Room of the Spung Mills Township Public Library. Here you will find historical and genealogical information, links to outside resources, and information about the history and culture of Spung Mills Township, Burlington County, New Jersey.

Spung Mills is a small community not far from the historic iron-working towns of Batsto and Atsion. The entire community lies within the boundaries of Wharton State Forest. Several years ago, a local amateur historian and genealogist left her books and papers to the Spung Mills Public Library. The Spung Mills History Room is a project (both offline and online) intended to share that gift with the wider community, and to encourage further community involvement. This wiki is the central point for the online component of the History Room; it is open 24/7, including holidays. If you would like to visit the Spung Mills History Room offline, it is open during normal library hours. On Friday mornings from 9 AM to 12 noon, a volunteer from the Spung Mills Historical Society is on the premises to help visitors with queries and research.

If you have an interest in the history and genealogy of Spung Mills or the New Jersey Pine Barrens, you are invited to contribute your knowledge to this site (no matter where you live). We are also interested in working with local community members (including school classes) on projects highlighting the history and culture of Spung Mills.

This group of pages is based on the genealogical research of Fiona Applegate, the original donor of the bequest that became the Spung Mills History Room. We invite all genealogists and family historians with an interest in the area to contribute their knowledge to these pages.

Locations in Spung Mills

These pages are devoted to the landscape and landmarks of Spung Mills. Although most are not on the National Register of Historic Places, nor the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, all have a history of their own that is worth sharing.
